The field of women's health has made great progress throughout the years. But one thing hasn't changed - the rate of hysterectomies in the United States is the same as it was in the 1940s.
Each year, more than 600,000 women undergo hysterectomies to remove fibroids. These noncancerous tumors grow inside the uterine wall and may cause heavy bleeding and cramping during menstruation, pain during intercourse and a swollen abdomen. While hyesterctomy may be the best option for some women with fibroids, there are many less invasive options available to women.
